World Environment Day

Today, 5 June, the world celebrates World Environment Day. For the Bukovel Sustainability Office, it is an opportunity to highlight the practical steps the resort takes every day to help protect the unique natural heritage of the Carpathians.

At Bukovel, sustainability is not a standalone project or a chapter in a report. It is a guiding philosophy that shapes every aspect of the resort's development. We believe a destination can thrive only when it grows in balance with the environment around it.

On this occasion, we are sharing some of the resort's key environmental initiatives and achievements.

International recognition: Green Key and Blue Flag

In 2026, ten hotels across the resort – Bukovel Hotel, Radisson Blu Resort, Glacier, Hvoya, Tavel, Mountain Residence, Shelter Apart Hotel, Twins, Hay by Edem Family and Beskyd Suites – successfully renewed their Green Key certification for a second consecutive year. This internationally recognised eco-label confirms compliance with best practices in energy efficiency, responsible water management, waste reduction and environmental education.

Another major milestone was the Blue Flag certification awarded to the Lake of Youth beach. This prestigious international recognition confirms that the lake meets strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety and visitor accessibility.

Closing the water loop responsibly

Water is one of the Carpathians' most valuable natural resources, making its responsible use and treatment a key priority for the resort. A modern filtration station with a capacity of 200 m³ per hour provides high-quality drinking water for guests and employees. Meanwhile, wastewater treatment facilities capable of processing 4000 m³ per day ensure full biological treatment before water is safely returned to the natural environment.

"Bukovel Sorts" and battery recycling

In November 2025, Bukovel launched the "Bukovel Sorts" programme. The first 16 containers for separate collection of glass, paper and plastic were installed at key locations throughout the resort. In partnership with an environmental NGO, a battery collection point was also established at the Tourist Centre. All collected batteries are sent for specialised recycling in EU countries, helping prevent hazardous substances from entering the environment.

Green mobility and sustainable habits

Reducing carbon emissions remains another important priority. Through the Green Mobility programme, the resort now offers eight EV charging stations, JET e-scooter rentals and seven waymarked trails with a combined length of more than 70 kilometres.

At the same time, Bukovel encourages guests to embrace more sustainable habits. One example is the "Discount in Your Own Cup" initiative, which helps reduce single-use plastic waste while promoting reusable alternatives.

Sustainable tourism begins with each of us

Protecting the Carpathians is a shared responsibility between businesses, local communities and every visitor. Every choice matters: bringing a reusable cup, sorting waste correctly, walking or cycling instead of driving short distances. Meaningful change begins with small everyday actions.

On World Environment Day, we thank everyone who supports responsible tourism and helps preserve the beauty of the Carpathians for future generations. Together, we are building a destination where memorable experiences and respect for nature go hand in hand.
