World recycling day

Global consumption of natural resources grows by 1-2% every year. This steady pressure on the planet is pushing countries toward smarter use of materials, recycling, and circular economy solutions.

Recycling means turning waste into resources that can be used again. It reduces landfill volumes, saves energy, and lowers environmental impact.

Recycling helps to

  • reduce landfill waste;
  • save natural resources;
  • cut energy consumption;
  • lower CO₂ emissions;
  • protect natural landscapes and biodiversity.

Surprising facts about resource savings

  • 60 kg of waste paper saves one tree;
  • 1 tonne of glass saves 600 kg of sand, 170 kg of limestone, 190 kg of soda and up to 40% of energy;
  • 1 tonne of aluminium cans saves 4 tonnes of bauxite and 95% of production energy;
  • 1 tonne of recycled plastic saves up to 80% of energy;
  • 1 tonne of plastic bottles frees 7.4 m³ of landfill space.

World Recycling Day is celebrated globally on November 15. The initiative began in Texas in 1994 and was later supported by the US National Recycling Coalition, which declared it an official holiday during its annual congress.

The motto of World Recycling Day 2025 was "Breaking Barriers". It highlights the need to overcome the challenges that slow down waste sorting and recycling:

  • limited infrastructure;
  • low public awareness;
  • unsustainable habits;
  • global waste management challenges.

In 2024, Bukovel announced its transition to a development model aligned with international sustainable tourism standards. Effective waste management, including waste separation and recycling, is one of the key elements of this strategy.

For Bukovel, this means

  • protecting the Carpathian ecosystem;
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • lowering landfill pressure;
  • shaping a culture of responsible tourism;
  • strengthening competitiveness among global ski resorts.

In autumn 2025, the pilot programme Bukovel sorts launched at the resort. Its goal is to encourage responsible waste behaviour among guests, partners, and team members.

Dedicated waste sorting containers are now installed across many resort locations for three main fractions:

  • glass;
  • paper;
  • plastic.

Each fraction is clearly labelled and visually explained, making sorting simple and convenient. The resort partners with "Alfa-Recycling", a company with many years of recycling experience. The partner handles transportation, processing, and recycling to ensure collected materials truly receive a second life.

Recycling is not only about saving money. It is about

  • protecting the environment;
  • tackling climate change;
  • supporting future generations;
  • promoting responsible consumption.

When waste becomes a resource

  • landfill pressure decreases;
  • natural resources are preserved;
  • pollution levels fall;
  • ecosystems get a chance to recover.

What can each of us do?

Small daily actions can create real change:

  • sort waste;
  • reuse items whenever possible;
  • choose products made from recycled materials;
  • reduce single-use plastic;
  • share recycling knowledge with friends and family.

At Bukovel, we create a space where nature and vacation comfort go hand in hand, and responsible behaviour becomes part of everyday culture.

Together we can

  • give waste a second life;
  • preserve the beauty of the Ukrainian Carpathians;
  • protect the planet’s resources for future generations.
