Today we are speaking with HVOYA Hotel, which has successfully renewed its Green Key certification for the second year in a row. GM Tetiana Kita shares the hotel’s sustainability journey, key environmental initiatives and views on the future of responsible tourism in Bukovel.
— Congratulations on receiving the Green Key certification once again. What sustainability practices have been implemented at HVOYA?
Thank you. For us, Green Key is more than a certificate – it is confirmation that we are moving in the right direction. We have introduced a broad range of environmental initiatives, including energy-efficient LED lighting with motion sensors, automated temperature management systems, waste reduction and sorting practices, the replacement of single-use plastics with reusable or biodegradable alternatives, landscaping projects and a strong focus on working with local suppliers and service providers.
— What results have these initiatives delivered?
The measures have helped us reduce electricity consumption, lower water usage and significantly decrease our reliance on single-use plastics. Beyond the direct environmental benefits, we have also noticed that many guests become inspired by these practices and continue making sustainable choices back at home.
— How did you prepare for Green Key certification?
The process took approximately a year and included three key stages:
- a comprehensive review of all operational processes, from energy use to supplier management;
- implementation of improvements, including equipment modernisation, staff training and the introduction of environmental procedures;
- documentation and verification, including evidence collection and an independent audit based on Green Key standards.
— How did the certification process help shape your sustainability strategy?
Green Key provided us with a clear framework for action. Rather than simply meeting a set of requirements, we adopted a structured approach to sustainable management. We now have a system that allows us to monitor results, set new goals and continuously improve our performance.
— Were there any requirements that led you to rethink internal processes?
Absolutely. One important change involved procurement. We now prioritise suppliers who minimise packaging and use environmentally responsible materials. We also expanded our waste-sorting infrastructure and switched to more environmentally friendly cleaning solutions.
— Tell us about your cooperation with the Sustainable Development Office.
Our partnership with the Sustainable Development Office goes far beyond the certification case: it revolves around shared initiatives and common goals.
The Office regularly launches projects that encourage guests to make environmentally conscious choices, and we are always eager to support them.
- "Discount in Your Own Cup" promotes the use of reusable drinkware;
- "15% off aquapark tickets" rewards guests who choose certified sustainable hotels.
The cooperation provides valuable guidance, encourages the exchange of ideas and helps strengthen the connection between the resort and environmentally conscious travellers. It is a partnership where even small actions contribute to meaningful environmental impact.
— Finally, how do you evaluate Bukovel’s transformation into a sustainable destination?
Bukovel has made remarkable progress in recent years. We can clearly see the development of infrastructure and the growing number of environmentally responsible recreation available to visitors.
We are proud to be part of this transformation and to demonstrate that sustainability is not just a concept but a practical approach to hospitality. Through our own experience, we show that high-quality guest experiences and care for nature can successfully go hand in hand.
