THE GREATEST MOUNTAIN OF UKRAINE - HOVERLA
A hiking tour to the greatest peak of Ukraine, Mt. Hoverla, is the sheer awesomeness of landscapes reaching for hundreds of kilometers. Don't miss the opportunity to put your endurance to a test and see the Carpathians in all their majestic grandeur!
Route: sports base "Zarosliak" – Mount Hoverla (2,061 m) – sports base "Zarosliak"
Distance: 8 km
Elevation gain: 870 m
Difficulty level: medium
The scenic trail lies within the central sector of the Chornohora mountain range – the highest part of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Along the way, hikers pass through several natural elevation zones that gradually shift with the climb: from spruce-beech forests to subalpine meadows and shrubs, ending in true alpine ecosystems at the summit.
The initial part winds through rich, brown mountain-forest soils covered with spruce and mixed woodlands. As the trail climbs, alpine meadows begin to appear – vibrant open areas where you may spot the East Carpathian rhododendron (Rhododendron myrtifolium), known in local folklore as the “red rue,” which blooms in summer in vivid purple tones.
Higher up, hikers enter the subalpine zone, where slopes are covered with dwarf mountain pine (Pinus mugo) and Siberian juniper (Juniperus sibirica), forming a dense and characteristic tangle of vegetation. Near the summit, feathergrass and sedge meadows take over, along with moss-lichen cover – a hallmark of alpine ecosystems.
Mt. Hoverla, with its dome-like shape, is composed mainly of Paleogene flysch formations (sandstones, argillites, and shales). At 2061 meters above sea level, it stands as the greatest peak of Ukraine. From the summit, panoramic views open onto Chornohora, Marmarosy, Svydovets and Gorgany.
A hike to Hoverla offers more than a physical challenge – it’s a living lesson in mountain ecology. Along the route, you’ll witness the vertical zonation of the Carpathian vegetation and experience firsthand the interplay of geology, landscape, climate, and flora in a high-altitude environment.
