The hike to Hutyn Tomnatyk and Rebra is both a challenge and a thrill – a route designed for those who truly crave the wild beauty of the Carpathians. Rising in the heart of the Chornohora ridge, Ukraine’s highest mountain range, these peaks crown the watershed between the Prut and Chornyi Cheremosh rivers.
Hutyn Tomnatyk (2,016 m) is one of Chornohora’s most scenic yet least crowded summits. Its name, thought to come from Romanian and meaning "foggy corner", fits perfectly. Steep slopes draped with alpine meadows and rocky scree lead to a summit that rewards climbers with sweeping views of neighboring giants – Bretskul, Shpytsi, Hoverla, and Petros. Just below, on its southern slope, lies Lake Nesamovyte, a glacial treasure that sparkles like a gemstone in the rugged mountain landscape.
Rebra (2,001 m) rises further south, one of only six two-thousanders in Ukraine. Its ridgeline resembles the spine of a prehistoric beast: narrow bands of rock push through the greenery like colossal ribs. Isolated and dramatic, the summit feels like a threshold between worlds – behind you lie clouds and mist, before you stretch the endless meadows and valleys of Hutsulshyna.
This hike demands preparation: sturdy trekking gear, weatherproof clothing, reliable boots, and careful planning are essential. Monitoring the mountain weather and pacing yourself wisely are part of the responsibility that comes with stepping into this elevated, remote terrain. Yet the reward is worth it. Each step brings new vistas, each climb delivers both effort and elation. The sense of achievement at reaching these two peaks lingers long after the journey ends, leaving you with memories carved as sharply as the ridges themselves.
