Bukovel's own Mountain Sea!

The word “sea” evokes more than just water – it brings memories of summer vacations, the sound of waves, the smell of salt, and children laughing on the beach. Yet beneath this romantic image lies a vast, intricate, and vital ecosystem, essential for life on Earth.

On September 25, the world celebrated World Maritime Day, a reminder that our oceans and seas require attention, respect, and protection.

Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), this day aims to:

  • highlight the importance of maritime transport;
  • stress the need to safeguard marine environments;
  • promote sustainable marine technologies;
  • encourage responsible stewardship of oceans, seas, and coastal zones.

2025 Theme: “Our Ocean, Our Duty, Our Opportunity”

The ocean plays a critical role in the global economy:

  • over 80% of global trade relies on maritime transport;
  • it provides food and jobs for millions while regulating the planet’s climate;
  • it is home to countless species essential for global ecological balance.

But this invaluable resource is under threat.

The ocean faces challenges

In recent decades, human activity has put tremendous pressure on marine ecosystems:

  • up to 12 million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year;
  • over a third of marine species are at risk of extinction;
  • rising ocean temperatures affect global climate and extreme weather patterns.

What can we do?

Protecting the oceans isn’t just the task of governments or organizations – everyone can help:

  • reduce single-use plastics such as bottles, bags, and utensils;
  • conserve water and energy to ease strain on natural resources;
  • educate others about the importance of healthy marine ecosystems;
  • support cleanup initiatives, sustainable fishing, and eco-tourism.

Healthy oceans, healthy planet

World Maritime Day is more than a date on the calendar – it is a call to action. To ensure the waves continue to enchant future generations, we must act today. And for visitors at Bukovel, our lakes are like miniature mountain seas, cared for with the same dedication.

"Preserving and protecting our water bodies is vital for sustainable development, economic stability, food security, and the well-being of future generations. Clean water is life itself, shared by humans and wildlife alike. Our actions today shape the future of our planet," says Bohdan Krasavtsev, Head of the Bukovel Sustainable Development Office.

Bukovel’s crown jewel – Lake of Youth – embodies this commitment. Carefully maintained and recognized with the Blue Flag certification this year, it is a mountain sea waiting to be explored.
