While Hoverla offers a good first impression of Chornohora, other two-thosanders reveal the wild, authentic heart of the Carpathian highlands.

This hike runs through the central part of Chornohora, the highest mountain range in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Here, nature showcases its raw beauty: steep slopes, rocky ridges, cirque basins, and ancient glacial formations that shape the dramatic landscape.

Brebeneskul (2,035 m) is Ukraine’s second-highest peak. Its name is thought to have Old Slavic or Romanian roots. On its northern slope, hidden in a deep glacial hollow, lies Lake Brebeneskul – one of the legendary "Eyes of the Carpathians". At 1,801 m above sea level, this alpine lake is fed by rain and meltwater, freezing solid every winter. A pristine natural gem, it blends seamlessly into the alpine scenery.

Rebra (2,001 m) stands nearby, with its striking rocky formations that resemble giant "ribs" – the inspiration for its name. From a distance, the huge rocky cliffs strike the imagination, resembling the backbone of an ancient beast. Atop of this two-thousander, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of all the major Carpathian ranges: Chornohora, Svydovets, and Marmarosy.

Along the trail, you’ll pass through a mosaic of mountain zones – from subalpine meadows dotted with grazing livestock to alpine scree slopes and bare summits. This is also a haven for rare flora and fauna: Carpathian endemics, mosses, lichens, and mountain wildlife such as lynx, brown bear, peregrine falcon, and capercaillie.

The hike demands good fitness, basic mountaineering skills, and proper gear, as it leads into one of the most elevated and remote corners of the Carpathians.

The reward? Two proud two-thousanders added to your collection, breathtaking mountain views, and a deeper connection with the Ukrainian Carpathians.
