Artificial lighting shapes safety, comfort, and atmosphere of any resort. Yet when it is excessive or poorly directed, it can create the opposite effect – light pollution. That is why Bukovel places strong emphasis on environmentally responsible lighting and continuously monitors its impact on the surrounding environment.
Light pollution refers to excess artificial lighting that spreads beyond intended purpose. It can illuminate the sky, forested areas, or building windows, affecting ecosystems, wildlife, people, and even the visibility of the starry night sky.
For an all-season resort like Bukovel, this issue is especially important. The resort is surrounded by Carpathian ecosystems that require careful stewardship and respect for natural daily and seasonal rhythms.
Monitoring light pollution
In 2025, Bukovel conducted dedicated measurements of light pollution levels across the resort. The results were positive: all lighting indicators meet Ukrainian state standards, with no violations recorded. In accordance with DBN V.2.5-28:2018, permissible lighting levels are not exceeded. This confirms that the resort’s lighting systems are safe for both guests and the natural environment.
Main sources of light at the resort
Lighting at an all-season resort is essential for
- ski slopes and lifts;
- roads, pedestrian areas, and parking facilities;
- hotel and restaurant facades;
- sports and recreational zones;
- evening events;
- guest safety and navigation after dark.
Bukovel’s goal is to provide sufficient illumination without placing unnecessary pressure on the surrounding environment.
Lighting principles in Bukovel
- Directed lighting. Fixtures are configured so that light reaches only the required surfaces and does not spill into the sky.
- Energy-efficient LED technology. LED lighting consumes less energy, lasts longer, and allows precise control of light direction.
- Balanced brightness. Illumination levels are adequate for safety without being excessive.
- Color temperature. Warmer tones are preferred, as they are gentler on the night environment and more comfortable for people.
- Automation. Timers and motion sensors ensure that lighting operates only when it is truly needed.
Lighting of ski slopes
Ski slopes used in the evening are illuminated in full compliance with safety standards:
- lighting covers the entire slope area;
- fixtures follow the direction of skier movement;
- light is positioned to avoid glare;
- even illumination is maintained without dark zones.
This approach ensures safe, comfortable, and high-quality skiing after sunset.
Effective control of light pollution delivers several key benefits:
- nature protection – reduced impact on plants and animals that depend on natural light–dark cycles;
- night sky preservation – the ability to see stars is part of the Carpathians’ natural and cultural heritage;
- energy efficiency – lower electricity consumption;
- guest comfort – thoughtfully designed lighting creates a calm, welcoming atmosphere without visual overload.
Responsible tourism is a core element of sustainable resort development.
Bukovel and sustainability
Managing light pollution is an integral part of Bukovel’s environmental strategy. The resort seeks to balance modern infrastructure, safety, and guest comfort with long-term care for nature and future generations.
Light in Bukovel is not just about brightness.
It is about balance, responsibility, and respect for the Carpathian landscape.
