Celebrate the New Year in an eco-friendly way!

Evergreen plants have long symbolised life, resilience, and the continuity of nature. This is why they are closely associated with winter celebrations, warmth, and hope. Yet in the modern world, this symbol is increasingly under threat due to the large-scale cutting of fir and pine trees during the holiday season.

Evergreen Plant Day, observed on 19 December, offers a moment to pause and reflect on how traditions can be preserved without harming forests and mountain ecosystems – and how conscious choices can support sustainable development.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of coniferous trees are cut down in Ukraine. Even when grown on dedicated plantations, this practice still carries an environmental cost:

  • extensive use of land and water resources;
  • CO₂ emissions linked to transportation;
  • a very short life cycle – just a few weeks of use followed by years needed for regeneration.

By protecting evergreen plants, we help maintain the delicate balance of forest ecosystems.

The Carpathians cannot be imagined without their evergreen forests. They shape the region’s distinctive mountain landscapes and fulfil essential functions:

  • stabilising soils on slopes and preventing erosion;
  • regulating water balance and nourishing Carpathian rivers;
  • reducing the risks of avalanches and mudflows;
  • providing habitats for rare species of birds and wildlife.

Choosing not to buy a cut Christmas tree does not mean sacrificing the festive spirit. On the contrary – it encourages creative and responsible alternatives:

  • a living potted tree that can later be planted;
  • decorative compositions made from branches, cones, and dried plants;
  • reusable wooden or textile Christmas trees;
  • light installations shaped like a tree;
  • decorating interiors with natural materials without damaging forests.

The true essence of the holidays lies not in the number of decorations, but in care for nature. By opting for eco-friendly alternatives, we:

  • reduce our individual environmental footprint;
  • help shape a culture of responsibility among children and young people;
  • support the principles of sustainable development.

One of the most meaningful symbolic holiday gestures is planting a tree or joining forest restoration initiatives. It is an investment in the future of the Carpathians – one that lasts for decades and brings tangible benefits to nature.

Evergreen Plant Day reminds us that traditions can be honoured without losing forests. For the Carpathians, a responsible attitude toward nature is inseparable from sustainable development. A conscious choice today means preserved slopes, clean springs, and living forests tomorrow.
