Why is it called Khomiak?
The name has nothing to do with wildlife on the summit. According to the most popular explanation, the mountain's rounded silhouette resembles the back of a small hamster resting among the ridges when viewed from afar. That distinctive profile gave the peak its memorable name.
Standing 1,542 metres above sea level, Khomiak is one of the signature summits of the Gorgany range. Dense spruce and beech forests blanket its lower slopes before giving way to the rugged stone fields that define this part of the Carpathians.
More demanding than it looks
Its proximity to Bukovel and its moderate height often create the impression that Khomiak is an easy hike. In reality, the mountain has a very different character.
The trail begins gently through peaceful woodland, but the final 400 to 500 metres become noticeably steeper. Rocky terrain replaces forest paths, requiring careful footing – particularly after rainfall, when the stones can be slippery.
For many hikers, this final section becomes the most memorable challenge of the ascent.
