

Building a major European-level resort in the heart of the Carpathians is, in many ways, like reaching an agreement with the wild. These mountains are beautiful, but the terrain can be challenging: the slopes consist of layers of rocks and clays, making some areas susceptible to landslides. To work safely with this landscape, Bukovel’s engineers have studied its characteristics in detail and developed a comprehensive protection system that largely remains invisible to guests. Special engineering structures protect not only the buildings themselves but also stabilise the mountain slopes and help prevent them from shifting.
One of the clearest examples is the use of buildings secured by deep foundations – effectively “anchoring” them to the mountainside. Multi-storey hotels place considerable pressure on the ground, adding to the challenges of construction in a mountainous seismic zone rated at magnitude 6. To ensure that buildings can withstand ground subsidence and seismic activity, engineers use monolithic reinforced concrete foundation slabs or piles of precisely calculated length instead of conventional strip foundations. These solutions secure structures deep within the slopes, providing a high level of environmental and structural safety for every guest.
4 steps to a safe slope
Creating ski runs inevitably involves removing some trees and exposing the soil beneath them. Without additional protection, heavy rain and melting snow could erode the ground, wash away parts of the slope and create gullies. Bukovel’s engineers address this risk through a four-stage erosion-control process.
- Preserving the soil: the fertile topsoil is carefully removed and stored for later use, while the roots of felled trees remain in the ground to help stabilise the underlying slope;
- Creating a framework: the slope is levelled and covered with a geogrid, which is securely anchored before being filled with stone and soil and thoroughly compacted;
- Returning the soil: the preserved fertile topsoil is then placed over the reinforced framework, while drainage channels are created to manage water flow;
- Natural stabilisation: finally, the ground is sown with grasses that develop strong root systems. As their roots grow through the supporting framework, they provide another natural layer of reinforcement and help stabilise the slope over the long term.
A living shield of new forests
A healthy forest can protect mountain slopes more effectively than plastic or concrete alone. Tree roots create a natural framework, while the soil and root systems work together like a sponge, absorbing excess water during heavy rainfall and helping hold the slopes firmly in place.
This is why Bukovel plants new trees to replace those removed during construction. Every year, thousands of young spruce, pine and beech trees are planted across the area, helping restore the natural strength of the mountain landscape.
Tested by major floods
The Carpathians experienced catastrophic floods of 2008 and 2020. Local rivers became powerful torrents capable of carrying stones and even trees torn out by their roots. Bukovel, however, came through these extreme events without taking serious damage.
One of the key protective measures was the reinforcement of riverbanks with gabions – robust three-dimensional structures made from galvanised metal mesh and filled with natural stone, crushed stone or pebbles. In these conditions, they proved more effective than rigid concrete structures. Water could pass through the gabions and lose some of its destructive force, while the mesh could flex slightly under impact rather than breaking apart.
Managing mountain water during an extreme flood, however, is only one part of the challenge. Just as important is the daily work required to ensure that water remains a safe and reliable resource for every guest. A specialised water supply and sewerage division of Bukovel is responsible for protecting water resources and maintaining the stable operation of the resort’s entire water supply system.
How we monitor water quality
- Strict limits: we carefully monitor the amount of water used for both drinking and snowmaking;
- 24/7 monitoring: Bukovel’s own certified laboratory monitors drinking water around the clock using modern rapid-analysis equipment, completely eliminating bacteriological risks;
- Double checks: water and treated wastewater samples are also regularly submitted to independent state laboratory centres for additional analysis;
- Clean rivers: before any return water is discharged into a river, it undergoes thorough treatment in strict accordance with environmental standards. Environmental taxes and fees are paid to the state budget for every unit of water resources used.
Open environmental monitoring for every guest
Transparency is an important part of Bukovel’s environmental approach. That is why the resort has launched Ecology Bukovel, a dedicated online platform where guests can check key environmental indicators in real time.
The platform provides information on mountain air quality through the AQI index, background radiation levels, the latest drinking water analyses across the resort, as well as water quality in the pools at MAVKA aquapark and the Lake of Youth.
