To mark the 35th anniversary of Independence, Bukovel invited guests to experience a spectacular Cossack show "Kvitka-Dusha" by the Gloria Youth Stilt Theatre from Drohobych.
This unique company operates under the Youth Commission of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Its performances have captivated audiences not only in Ukraine but also in Rome and Budapest. At Bukovel, Gloria transformed an open resort space into a stage for a spectacular story of resilience and courage – themes that resonate particularly strongly as Ukrainians continue to fight for their freedom.
At the heart of the performance was a flower – the “Kvitka-Dusha”, or “soul-flower” – symbolising the nation’s inner strength and purity. Towering actors on stilts, dressed in stylised Cossack costumes, appeared as its guardians. Their height gave every movement an extraordinary scale: elements inspired by Cossack dance and combat became broad, sweeping gestures, creating the impression of giant warriors standing watch over the land.
The open-air setting brought performers and spectators even closer together. A powerful Cossack march, traditional motifs and the rhythmic sound of kettledrums accompanied the action and kept the audience immersed in the performance.
Director Father Andrii Bun built the show around striking contrasts:
- lyrical scenes portrayed the emergence of life and the blossoming of the symbolic soul-flower;
- fast, expressive combat dances on stilts captured the energy and strength of the Cossack spirit;
- wide Cossack trousers and flowing costume elements caught the mountain wind, adding even more movement and visual impact to the performance.
In the context of the ongoing war, Gloria’s performance became more than a historical spectacle. It was also a reminder of the connection between generations and of the enduring importance of defending one’s homeland. A company already known for its international performances brought the heroic imagery of Cossack culture into a vibrant form of contemporary street theatre.
The show was open to everyone, allowing guests to share a sense of unity, common roots and patriotic spirit. The interaction did not end with the performance itself: throughout the show and afterwards, guests had the chance to take photos and capture memorable moments alongside the tall Cossack figures.
In the heart of the Carpathians, the symbolic “soul-flower” blossomed as an image of Ukraine whose future is being shaped by a new generation of people.
We thank Father Andrii Bun for bringing creative young people together through faith, art and love for their homeland, the remarkable young performers of Gloria, and everyone who joined us for this celebration.
